Have you ever needed your Wi-Fi password for a new device, only to realize you can’t remember it? Don’t worry—retrieving your saved Wi-Fi password is easier than you think, and you don’t need to be a tech expert to do it. (Although this tip is a bit on the techy side.) In this Tuesday Tip, I’ll show you a quick, step-by-step method to find your Wi-Fi password on your Windows PC in less than a minute.

Why You Might Need Your Wi-Fi Password

  • Setting up a new phone, tablet, or laptop
  • Sharing access with a trusted guest
  • Troubleshooting network issues

The 60-Second Trick (Windows PC)

  • Open the Start Menu and type cmd in the search bar.
  • Right-click Command Prompt and select "Run as administrator."
  • In the Command Prompt window, type:
    • netsh wlan show profiles
    • Press Enter. This will show a list of all Wi-Fi networks your PC has connected to.
  • Find the name (SSID) of your Wi-Fi network in the list. Then type:
    • netsh wlan show profile name="YourNetworkName" key=clear
    • (Replace YourNetworkName with your actual Wi-Fi name. Keep the quotes.)
  • Press Enter. Scroll through the results until you see Key Content—that’s your Wi-Fi password!

Extra Tips

  • If you’re on a Mac, you can use the Keychain Access app to find saved Wi-Fi passwords.
  • Always keep your password private and only share it with people you trust.
  • Consider changing your Wi-Fi password regularly for added security.

Troubleshooting

  • If you don’t see your network listed, make sure you’re connected to it or have connected before.
  • If you get an error, double-check the network name and spelling.

Staying Secure

Remember, your Wi-Fi password is the key to your home network. Don’t share it with strangers and avoid using simple or easily guessed passwords.
