# Thanksgiving Tech: Prep, Shopping, and Family Fun

 by [Kevin Mewborn](https://htmsconnect.com/simpletech-time/author/kevin-mewborn)

Published: Nov 3, 2026, 9:00:00 AM

Thanksgiving has a way of sneaking up. One week you're putting away Halloween decorations, and the next you're counting chairs, hunting for the roasting pan, and wondering how many people are actually coming. The good news is that the phone, tablet, and smart speaker you already own can take a surprising amount of that juggling off your plate. Here are a few easy ways to let technology handle the busywork so you can focus on the people around the table.

## Use one shared list for the whole family

Instead of texts scattered across three group chats, start one shared list that everyone can see. Apple Notes, Google Keep, and Microsoft To Do all let you share a checklist with family members for free. Add the menu, who's bringing what, and the grocery items still needed.

When your sister checks off "cranberry sauce," everyone sees it right away. No duplicate pies, no forgotten rolls, and far fewer "did anyone get the..." phone calls on Wednesday night.

- Create one list for the menu and assignments, and a second for groceries.
- Share it with the people who are actually cooking or shopping, not the whole family tree.
- Keep it open in the store so you can check items off as you go.

## Let your smart speaker be your kitchen helper

If you have an Amazon Echo, Google Nest, or Apple HomePod, Thanksgiving is when it really earns its spot on the counter. With messy hands, you can simply ask it to set a timer. Better yet, give your timers names, like a "turkey timer" for four hours and a "stuffing timer" for 40 minutes, so you're never guessing which alarm is going off.

You can also ask quick questions mid-recipe, like how many tablespoons are in a quarter cup, or add items to your shopping list the moment you realize you're out of butter.

## Shop early sales without getting burned

Thanksgiving week kicks off the biggest shopping season of the year, and scammers know it. A few habits keep your money and information safe:

- Type store web addresses yourself or use the store's official app, rather than tapping links in unexpected emails or texts.
- Be wary of deals that seem far too good, especially from sites you've never heard of.
- Pay with a credit card or a trusted payment service instead of a debit card, since credit cards typically offer stronger fraud protection.
- Turn on purchase alerts from your bank so you're notified of every charge.

If a "missed delivery" or "problem with your order" text shows up, go straight to the retailer's website or app to check, instead of using the link in the message.

## Bring faraway family to the table

Not everyone can make the trip, but a video call can still give them a seat at the table. FaceTime, Google Meet, Zoom, and WhatsApp all work well. A little prep makes a big difference:

- Test the call a day early, especially with older relatives who may need help joining.
- Prop up a tablet at the end of the table instead of passing a phone around.
- Plug the device in so the battery doesn't die halfway through dinner.

## Make tech part of the fun, then put it down

Technology can bring everyone together after the meal, too. A shared photo album in Google Photos or iCloud lets everyone add their pictures in one place, so nobody has to chase down that great shot of Grandpa. A family trivia game on the TV, or a favorite holiday movie in the living room, gives all ages something to enjoy together.

Just as important, consider setting a "phones down" time during dinner. A simple basket by the door works wonders. The point of all these tools is to make the day easier, not to compete with the conversation.

## A calmer holiday starts with small steps

You don't need new gadgets or complicated setups to have a smoother Thanksgiving. Start with one shared list, a few named timers, and some smart shopping habits, and you'll feel the difference by Thursday afternoon.
